ARCHEO TOUR - TRAJANS COLUMN
At the beginning of 102AD the second Dacian campaign began. Trajan loads reinforcements onto the ships of the “classis pannonica”, the roman fleet of the Upper Danube.
In the scene we see Trajan himself at the tiller of one of the ships.
The Roman cavalry advances,
and puts the enemy cavalry to flight.
With the enemy cavalry defeated, the Romans and their Germanic auxiliaries turn to hand-to-hand fighting and there is no escape for the Dacians.
After the battle many Dacians are taken prisoner.
The legionaries look after their own wounded.
An enemy spy is led before Trajan, while the army prepares for another battle. In the upper left section we can see the ballistae wagons, the mobile artillery of the Romans.
The roman legionaries put the Dacians to flight. The dead are numerous.
Trajan, with the standards of the victorious legions at his side, praises his troops.
In the next scene we can see captured Roman prisoners tortured by women, while the Dacian chiefs surrender to Trajan. This episode concludes the second campaign.
