The Romans loved baths and gardens.
In public and private gardens, as is witnessed by the frescoes, were grown a variety of plants, and these delightful environments were made even more enchanting with fountains and statues.
The plants have disappeared, survive the frescoes, like those of the extraordinary villa of Livia at Prima Porta, kept in the National Archaeological Roman Museum.
The sculptures, at least in part, are to be saved and we can see them in our incomparable Roman museums.
The images that follow are intended to restore the idea of what were the gardens of the Romans.
