THE INTERIOR OF THE PANTHEON

The dome’s cap is shaped by five series of lacunars designed in order to umburden the weight while proceeding towards the top of the dome. For the same reason the top of the cap was built employing volcanic materials.

Nevertheless the dome, that was the largest ever built before the ferroconcrete employment, discharges an enormous weight substained by gigantic columns and big thrust walls.

The diameter of the circular dome’s eye is 9 metres long and the solution found to solve static problems represents an engineering miracle.

The final photos show the Annunciation by Melozzo da Forlì and the graves of Raphael and Annibale Carracci.
