The first owner of Palazzo Altemps was Girolamo Riario, nephew of Pope Sixtus IV della Rovere (the Pope of the Sistine Chapel). Girolamo committed the design to Melozzo da Forlì, who in 1480 completed the work.

In 1511 the new owner Cardinal Francesco Soderini, powerful and ambitious, wanted to expand the building and called as architects Antonio da Sangallo the Elder and the great Baldassare Peruzzi, who is responsible for the courtyard, considered one of the best, if not the most beautiful of Rome.

Years pass, change owners, until in 1568 Cardinal Marco Sittico Altemps, nephew of Pope Pius IV, bought the palace which was named after him and is now one of the four seats of the National Roman Museum.
