LANDSCAPES

The seventeenth-century landscapes are of uncertain origin, in the past reached out to Gaspard Dughet (1615 - 1675), now prefers Giovan Francesco Grimaldi (1606 - 1680).

Dughet son of a French chef and an Italian mother, was born in Rome.
The way to the art was opened when his sister Anna was married to the famous painter Nicolas Poussin, also known as Nicholas Pussino, from whom he learned the craft, to become a famous landscape painter, but given the relationship often was called Gasparo Pussino.

Giovan Francesco Grimaldi, named il Bolognese, was related to the Carracci, under whose guidance served his apprenticeship.
He came to Rome in 1627, probably entered the circle of Domenichino, while certainly worked with the great Alessandro Algardi.

In 1648 he was called to France by Cardinal Mazarin and for a couple of years he painted frescoes in the palaces of the cardinal, of Louis XIV and the Louvre.
Back in Rome he was appointed prince, ie director of the prestigious Academy of San Luca.
In Rome, died, leaving a great memory not only as an artist but also as a good man and charitable.
