DE BELLO DACICO - III DACIAN CAMPAIGN

Trajan moved with patience and intelligence that his long experience advised him.

In early spring of 102 advanced with three columns, one started from Moesia Inferior going north to reach the pass of the Red Tower; the other two followed the roads open in the first campaign, to be reunited at the foot of the pass of the Iron Gates, manned by the Romans.

Decebal, cornered, tried to negotiate the terms of peace, but Trajan mistrusting the good faith of his enemy, the refused the proposals of the Dacian king.

Meanwhile Roxolani, wasted by so many defeats, returned to their lands. The Dacians then took refuge in their strongholds on the Orastie mountains, freeing Bastarnae.
Dacian fortresses were well built, defended by what was called the “Murus Dacicus” (Dacian walls), but the Romans were masters in the art of the siege. Dropping the first fortresses, Decebal, evaluated vain resistance, capitulated.

Finally ended with the Roman victory the first Dacian war.
