COSIMO FANCELLI

Cosimo Fancelli (1618 – 1688) began his work as a sculptor in the workshop of Bernini, but, along this time, it is difficult to distinguish what, is to attribute to his own hands. Anyway from 1650 he began his independent artistic life.

His main Roman works can be seen in the church of Jesus, where he carved Justice; in Santa Maria in Vallicella he carved the stucco framing the great cycle of paintings by Pietro da Cortona; in Santa Maria della Pace he carved the statues of the Chigi Chapel, where Raphael frescoed on the arc the famous Sibyls.

In Santa Maria in via Lata, in the lower church, he carved the relief with Saints Peter, Paul and Luke.

In Santa Maria sopra Minerva, in the Chapel Altieri, sculpted the busts of Cardinal Giovanni Altieri and his brother Lorenzo, the father of Pope Clement X; in the Basilica of San Marco you can see the tomb of Cardinal Vidman.
