A BIT IN DEEP: COSIMO FANCELLI

Cosimo Fancelli entered the workshop of Bernini, thanks to his elder brother James, who was one of Bernini aid.

At almost 30, he left Bernini to join Pietro da Cortona, who assured him considerable autonomy.

And just for Pietro da Cortona, in his preferred church Saints Luke and Martina, Fancelli sculpted Saint Theodora, St. Dorothy and Santa Sabina.
Unfortunately, the church is closed to the public.

When in 1669 Pietro da Cortona died, Bernini called Fancelli to sculpt, on the bridge of the angels, the angel with the Shroud.

Fancelli, between his various activities, oversaw the restoration of the "Ancient Marbles", that is the Roman statues that especially the Borghese family had gathered.
